Services to be held Sunday in observance of Memorial Day

Memorial Day will be observed Sunday in Gloucester and Mathews with a pair of services held by the two counties’ American Legion posts.

Post 75, Gloucester, will hold its service at 2 p.m. in front of the Courts Building, with wreaths to be laid at the Gloucester County Veterans Memorial. At 2:30 p.m., the Mathews service will be held at the Post 83 headquarters in Hudgins.

In Gloucester

The featured speaker at Sunday’s Gloucester service will be the Rev. Bradley Alphonso Holmes, pastor of St. Paul Baptist Church. A Gloucester native, Holmes, 60, attended Thomas C. Walker High School, and after integration graduated from Gloucester High School in 1971. After earning his bachelor’s degree from Norfolk State, he entered the Army as a second lieutenant.
