Sandra “Sandy” Leigh (Warthan) Pollock, 90, a longtime resident of Gloucester, Virginia, died peacefully on August 30, 2026 surrounded by her family, following a long journey with Alzheimer’s disease.
Born in Washington, D.C., Sandy was raised in Wheeling, West Virginia. She graduated from Wheeling High School and the Ohio Valley Hospital School of Nursing.
Sandy was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and registered nurse, remembered for her kindness and the quiet love she gave to her family and those around her. Affectionately known as “Mimi” by her grandchildren and the generations that followed, family was always at the heart of her life.
Sandy and her husband, Lieutenant Colonel Robert “Bob” T. Pollock, shared nearly 61 years of marriage. His service in the United States Army took them and their children around the world, where together they built a life and raised their family. After his retirement from the military, Sandy continued her own career as a registered nurse, serving as a nurse and supervisor at Riverside Family Practice in Newport News, Virginia, for more than 30 years.
Throughout her life, Sandy enjoyed reading, walking, and traveling, and especially treasured time spent with family.
Sandy also believed in serving her community. She was a founding member of the Gloucester Mathews Care Clinic, volunteered with the Adult Literacy Program and the American Red Cross, and was an active member of Abingdon Episcopal Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Pollock; her mother, Elisabeth “Bette” R. (Etchison) Trovato; her father, Linwood F. Warthan; her stepfather, Anthony Trovato; her brothers, Frank A. Warthan, Michael “Mike” W. Coleman, and A. John Trovato; her sister, H. Patricia “Pat” Warthan, and her son-in-law, Bryan Rose.
Sandy is survived by her sister, Pamela Trovato Nau; her children, Jan Orga (Richard), Stuart Pollock (Michelle), and Karen Rose; her grandchildren, Meghan (Gilbert), Alexander, Robin (Eric), Daniel, Jessica (David), and Shannan (Brandon); her great-grandchildren, Leighann (Richie), Joey, Dahlia, Carter, Owynn, Weston, Brooklyn, Sydney, and Matthew; and her great-great-grandchildren, Elleigh and Myleigh. She also leaves behind many extended family members and friends who were fortunate to know and love her.
A funeral service, conducted by the Rev. Sven vanBaars, will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at Abingdon Episcopal Church in Gloucester, Virginia.
