Rt. 17 speed limit increases in northern Gloucester

The Virginia Department of Transportation will install new speed limit signs Monday on a portion of Route 17 in Gloucester County raising the speed limit to 60 miles per hour.

The speed limit will be increased from 55 to 60 on a 4.6-mile section of highway from the Middlesex/Gloucester County line to 0.78 of a mile north of Route 616 (Belroi Road) in Gloucester.

According to a VDOT release, drivers should be aware of crews installing the new signs along the shoulder of the road between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. All travel lanes will remain open in the work zone. In the event of inclement weather, the sign installation will take place on Tuesday.

VDOT conducted a study on this segment of Route 17 following legislation passed by the Virginia General Assembly in 2018.
