Portion of Gloucester’s Indian Road to remain closed through mid-October

A portion of Indian Road in Gloucester will remain closed through at least mid-October, according to the latest update from VDOT spokesperson Darragh Frye. Motorists will continue to have to travel an approximate 11-mile detour around the closed section of road.

The portion of Indian Road between Mohican Drive and Fary’s Mill Road was closed to traffic July 31 when a portion of the roadway washed away following intense rains.

Since that time, Frye said VDOT officials have obtained an emergency authorization to proceed with a contract to replace the concrete pipes that run underneath the road. “The contractor has been hired by the department and will begin work next week,” she said. “The road will remain closed while work is underway.” Construction is anticipated to take 10 weeks to complete.
