Planners work on capital improvement plan

The Mathews County Planning Commission will be working on a capital improvement plan for the county over the next few months. 

During the commission’s meeting Tuesday night, members discussed ways in which to proceed with the plan, including using the comprehensive plan to establish what the county’s needs are, defining which of those needs would fall within the scope of capital improvements and prioritizing them, undergoing training for the task, and coordinating with the school system.

Among the needs mentioned in the comp plan are renovations to the buildings on the county’s court green, development of a public water system, expansion of broadband, improvements to the East River Boat Yard and Haven Beach, and development of bike paths.

The commission also briefly discussed a report on aquaculture conflicts presented by Planning and Zoning Director Thomas Jenkins for their consideration. The report was developed for Gloucester County in 2008 by a committee t...
