Planners to discuss ‘Village Mixed Use’ district

The Gloucester Planning Commission will convene tonight, Thursday, Jan. 3, for its first session of the new year to continue discussion on the creation of a new “Village Mixed Use” or VMX district.

Planners will also hear Thursday from staff regarding R-MD and R-MH definitions, which deal with mixed density residential and manufactured homes respectively.

Beginning in the December session, planners and staff discussed the prospect of combining the already-existing B-2 Village Business and RMX Residential Mixed-Use districts into the new VMX classification.

The VMX definition would allow for a blend of low-density business and residential purposes, similar to what currently exists in Gloucester Court House. Residential structures such as apartments being located on floors above shops or other small businesses, provided the total structure doesn’t exceed a certain height, is one potential use of this district that has come up in past discussions.
