Planners approve zoning text amendments

The Mathews County Planning Commission unanimously endorsed two zoning text amendments following public hearings Tuesday. Planners tabled a third one pending further work on the details.

Commission members voted to recommend that the board of supervisors approve a text amendment to extend the length of time staff has to work on applications for various requests from 30 to 60 days. If approved, the amendment would cover conditional use permits, variances, text and map amendments. Commission member Billy Cook pointed out that the change would allow commission members and supervisors to get packets on the requests earlier, allowing more time for study.

The commission also supported a text amendment to bring the Mathews County Zoning Ordinance in compliance with the Code of Virginia by updating the definition of variance and the variance section.
