Chowning to discuss ‘Chesapeake Bay Folklife’ on Oct. 22 in Mathews

Noted local author Larry Chowning will host a discussion featuring his soon-to-be released book “Chesapeake Bay Folklife” at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 22, at the Mathews Maritime Foundation museum, 482 Main Street.His latest book is a historical account of waterman traditions, maritime culture and folk crafts. Chowning has been a reporter for the Urbanna-based Southside Sentinel for more than 40 years and has published numerous books on Chesapeake Bay traditions and history, with a focus on the Middle Peninsula.Other books by Chowning include “Harvesting the Chesapeake, Tools and Traditions,” “Soldiers at the Doorstep: Civil War Lore” and “Chesapeake Bay Buyboats: Deadrise and Cross-Planked.”In addition to his newspaper reporting, Chowning has been a field editor for National Fisherman Magazine, served on the Urbanna Town Council and the Urbanna Oyster Festival Foundation Board.
