Open house Saturday at new Callis House Inn

A community open house will be held from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 18, at the Callis House Inn on Main Street in Mathews.

Visitors will be able to tour the historic house, which will be opening soon as a hotel.

A raffle is being held for five chances at a one-night stay at the inn. Tickets are $10 each or three for $25 and are available at Morse Enterprises, Bay School Community Arts Center, and the Mathews County Visitor and Information Center on Main Street.

Proceeds from the raffle will benefit Preservation Mathews, the organization that stepped in to save the house by paying to have it moved from its previous location on property belonging to the Bay School to its current location on Main Street. Ian Morse of Morse Enterprises purchased the house for $1 from the Bay School and has repurposed it as an inn.

The drawing for the raffle will be held on Friday, Aug. 17, during an invitation-only open house at the inn.
