Off-duty Gloucester deputy shot after confronting break-in suspect in York

A Gloucester Sheriff’s deputy remains in stable condition after he was shot Monday while off duty and confronting a man breaking into vehicles in York County.

York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the 100 block of Leslie Lane in the Tabb Lakes subdivision for a report of a shooting just after 4 a.m. Monday, according to YPSO Information Officer Shelley Ward.

The YPSO said it appeared that someone was breaking into vehicles and a male homeowner, later identified only as an off-duty GSO deputy, confronted the person and was shot. The deputy was taken to a hospital where he remained in stable condition Tuesday.

YPSO deputies detained a male suspect after the shooting and later identified him as Jordan Edmonds Hilliard, 21, of Hampton. Hilliard was arrested and charged with six felonies, including attempted capital murder and aggravated malicious wounding, and several misdemeanors.
