Mathews County’s public safety personnel are facing issues with the L3Harris emergency radio system that was implemented last year after years of inadequate radio coverage in the county. They are seeking a solution that would involve switching over to Motorola as the service provider at a possible cost of $3 million-$4 million. Bob Brown, chairman of the county’s Public Safety Communications Committee, told the Mathews Board of Supervisors during the September meeting last Thursday that the radio system was designed to provide 95 percent coverage countywide, but only outdoors. While the fire department, rescue squad and sheriff’s office all have very good radio communications from their vehicles, he said, they do not get good reception inside homes, businesses, schools and churches, where much of the work of public safety staff is done.
