Newport News man dies in Gloucester accident

A single-vehicle accident in Gloucester on Monday took the life of a Newport News man. 

The accident occurred at 2:35 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of Route 14 just east of the intersection with Main Street in Gloucester. Virginia State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya said Jiree Dequayne Burrell, 24, of Gloucester was driving a 1998 Ford Explorer eastbound on Route 14 when he lost control, ran off the roadway and overcorrected. 

Anaya said the vehicle overturned several times and ejected a backseat passenger, Tremayne Ryeshawn Safewright, who was not wearing a seatbelt. She said Safewright, 26, of Newport News was flown to Riverside Regional Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.

Burrell suffered serious injuries, Anaya said, and was also transported to Riverside Regional. Preliminary investigations reveal that speed and alcohol were contributing factors in the crash, according to Anaya, and charges are pending a review of the case by the Gloucester Commonwealth&rsquo...
