The Mathews County Board of Supervisors took a tour of the new Mathews Family YMCA last Thursday, getting a first-hand look not only at the colorful walls and bright, open spaces, but also at the safety upgrades the county paid for with grants and county funds.

The facility, on Cricket Hill Road at Hudgins, is nearing completion with a grand opening celebration scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 25.

Project manager Linwood Burton of The Bush Company of Williamsburg led the tour. He told the supervisors that the building will be substantially completed by Aug. 6, with a final walk-through planned for Aug. 7.

Currently, contractors are working on the state-regulated water system, which was “a big design addition,” he said, and the floors should be done by Sunday or Monday. The HVAC system is already up and running, and once the water system has been approved, said Burton, “we’ll find out how good the plumbing is.”
