New dock to get use in Put-In Creek Biathlon

Virginia Tidewater Trailrunners, a local running group, expects to make inaugural use of the new dock at Put-In Creek in Mathews with a public run and paddle—the Put-In Creek Biathlon—on Saturday, Oct. 3.

Christine Johnson of Port Haywood, a member of the running club, said the group held its first biathlon last year, but the turnout was small, and it hopes to have more participants this year.

The event consists of a three-mile run from Put-In Creek to Williams Wharf, followed by a 2.5-mile paddle back to Put-In Creek. Participants will drop off kayaks at Williams Wharf between 8 and 8:30 a.m., then congregate at Put-In Creek between 8:30 and 9 a.m. to register. If there’s a delay in completion of the dock, the event will be held the following week.

The winner of the biathlon will receive a cash prize, said Johnson, with the amount dependent on the number of registrants. The cost to participate is $10. Runners must be at least 14 years of age.
