New book documents Civil War period at Warner Hall

The Gloucester Historical Society has announced publication of a new book, “The Civil War Period (1854-1864), Letters of Colin Clarke, Warner Hall, Gloucester County, Virginia” by Dr. David A. Brown.

Colin Clarke’s letters were written mainly to relatives and describe life on the plantation and the hardships endured during the Civil War, a release said. Brown transcribed these letters several years ago while he and Thane Harpole were conducting an archaeological dig at Warner Hall. Brown is donating the proceeds from this book to an internship fund sponsored by the Historical Society.

This book can be purchased at the Gloucester Museum of History for $10.
