Mother sentenced to 15 years in child’s death

Miranda Dawn Gilbert of North was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Wednesday for the scalding death last February of her 1-year-old son, Brayden Nikolaus Blenaru. She was also sentenced to five years on each of two charges—one charge of child abuse and neglect leading to serious injury regarding Brayden and one charge of felony child abuse or neglect with reckless disregard for human life regarding her other two children. 

Judge Jeffrey W. Shaw handed down the sentences, instructing that they run concurrently. He also required that Gilbert be on probation for three years on each count following incarceration.

Gilbert was convicted of the offenses in a plea agreement reached Oct. 24, 2018. She was found guilty then of felony murder, which was defined by Commonwealth’s Attorney Tom Bowen as “accidental killing of a person during the course of a felony.” Gilbert had been arrested on Feb. 3, 2018 after an emergency call was received at 12:20 that afternoon ...
