Hallieford resident Brienna Carter, a junior at Mathews High School, will have an opportunity this summer to take a once-in-a-lifetime trip. After going through an interview and orientation process, Carter was selected to serve as a People to People Student Ambassador, visiting France, Switzerland, Austria and Italy July 5-23.
Carter, who was raised in Mathews, has had the opportunity to travel some along the eastern United States, but has never been on an airplane, and has never really been away from home for that length of time. "I’m excited," Carter said. "I’m a little nervous, but not that much."
Carter’s dad, Michael chimed in, saying, "The nervous people are the parents."
Michael Carter and his wife, Lizzette, said when they saw the opportunity arise for their daughter to take this trip of a lifetime, they jumped at the opportunity. "Life is so hectic," Mr. Carter said. "You go to college and then go to work and traveling around the world is not a priority anymore."
The Carters said they were impressed with the People to People program because it not only provides an opportunity for the teens going on these trips to get to know one another before departing to a foreign country, but it demonstrates and ensures the highest security measures will be taken to ensure the teens stay safe.
A trip like this costs about $7,000, Mr. Carter said. Never having an opportunity to take a trip like this themselves, he said, "To do this for her … it’s a blessing."
Carter will be taking extensive photos and videos, documenting her trip as it goes along. When she returns, the community will be invited to Agape Vision Baptist Church in Foster, where the family attends, to share her journey with her.
Mr. Carter said those interested in helping Brienna with the trip expenses can contact him or Mrs. Carter at 725-2660 or 725-8227.
