After almost two full weeks without playing any games, the Mathews High School varsity softball team finally took the field again, traveling to King William on Tuesday. Mathews posted a 10-2 win to improve to 2-0 in the Tidewater District.
As the visiting team, Mathews hit first and immediately put pressure on the Lady Cavaliers’ defense and pitching as leadoff hitter Sharese Jarvis bounced the ball off the outfield fence, even though she was thrown out at second base.
With two outs, Virginia Scatchard drove a ball to right field for a double and Lindsay Crigler followed with a double of her own to left field to take a 1-0 lead.
In the second inning Mathews didn’t let up. Jarvis stepped to the plate with two outs and drove a ball over the centerfield fence. King William threatened in almost every inning, loading the bases twice with no outs. However, the Lady Devils played error-free defense and held the host team to two runs, while Crigler drove a pitch over the fence for a solo homer in the fourth inning.
In the top of the seventh, the Devils’ bats broke the game open, forcing the Cavaliers to make a pitching change. When King William finally recorded three outs, Mathews had increased its lead to 10-2 and shut King William down in the seventh inning.
Crigler went two innings and Lindsay Collins pitched the remainder of the game. Jarvis had three hits including a home run for the Lady Devils. Kaitlin Eriksen, Scatchard, Sydney Morgan and Crigler all had two hits each with Crigler adding a home run. Collins, Taylor Denton and Sammi Rutter had one hit apiece.
