MELVIN LEE CALLIS

Melvin Lee Callis, a lifetime resident of Mathews County, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 2, 2022. Melvin was born on Nov. 10, 1945. He proudly served the trucking industry for 57 years, beginning his career in 1965. At the age of 19, he went to work with his father, starting out driving a 10-wheeler. Trucking and his family were his life and he passed along doing what he loved most.

Melvin was preceded in death by his wife, Nan Lee; his stepchildren, Chris and Mary Courtney Duncan; his parents, Ernest and Miriam Callis, and his brother, Keith Callis.

He is survived by his daughter, Ashley McBurney (Chris), and his son, Todd Callis (Gina); grandchildren, Kristopher, Nick, Sebastian, Layla, Hannah, and Emma. He is also survived by his brother, Thomas Callis, and sisters, Susan Cox and Nancy Mitchell, and several extended family members and close friends.

A Celebration of Life graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 11, 2022, at Christ Church Cemetery on Williams Wharf Road in Mathews. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad, 94 Cricket Hill Road, Hudgins, Va. 23076.
