‘Mathews Men’ author to discuss new book Friday

William Geroux, author of “The Mathews Men,” will discuss his new book “The Ghost Ships of Archangel: The Arctic Voyage that Defied the Nazis,” at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Kingston Parish House, 370 Main Street, Mathews.

The talk is sponsored by the Gwynn’s Island Museum. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

The narrative nonfiction work tells the story of Allied convoy PQ-17, which sailed across the ocean in 1942 in an effort to deliver a cargo of vital war supplies to the Soviet Union, a tenuous U.S. ally. The convoy encounters a crisis “in an unforgiving place,” said a press release, inspiring “acts of courage and sacrifice, and a daring flight into the polar ice field.”

Geroux said in the release that he made two trips to Russia before writing the book, visiting Archangel, Murmansk and St. Petersburg in an effort to see as much of the convoy’s route as possible. He also visited the remote bay in Iceland where th...
