Mathews Memorial Library launched Wi-Fi To Go late last month, a new service to provide high-speed internet access for library patrons anytime, anywhere.
Wi-Fi To Go is a kit that library patrons age 18 or older can check out for up to three weeks, with renewals possible, said a press release. The kits are available for immediate circulation as long as available, or they can be reserved for checkout.

The kit includes a Verizon Mi-Fi 8800L, Parsec PTAMM2L06 Omnidirectional Antenna with Magnetic Mounting Base, two coax connector adapters attached to antenna cables, a charging cable and charging block, and a Mi-Fi Quick Start Guide. Unlimited Internet data service is provided by Verizon Wireless.
A Wi-Fi Hotspot is a device used to connect a wireless-enabled device, such as a laptop, smartphone or tablet, to the internet, said the press release. The Hotspot is portable and can connect anywhere, provided there is adequate cellular data coverage. To enhance coverage in dead zones, the Hotspot can be connected the external antenna included with the kit. Up to five devices may be connected simultaneously.
Funding for this service was procured by the Mathews Broadband Advisory Board through Gov. Ralph Northam’s initiative CARES Act funding to fast track broadband. Total funding received for this project was $15,696.75. This enabled the library to purchase 25 Mi-Fi hotspots and external antennas, as well as a service contract with Verizon for one year of unlimited broadband internet service.
