Mathews girls hold 7-0 record

The Mathews High School girls’ varsity basketball team rounded out a busy week of action with four victories to remain undefeated. The busy schedule has the Devils sitting with a record of 7-0, completing all seven games in less than two weeks.

Mathews started the week at Lancaster, defeating the Red Devils last Thursday, 51-44, in a close contest. Savanna Wooten led the Blue Devils with 20 points; Hallie Duncan and Harley Haydon added 12 points each, followed by Maria Spadaccini with four, Mariah Robinson with two and Yolanda Fells with one point. In trademark fashion, the Lady Blue Devils played great team defense to defeat the home team.

The following night, the Lady Blue Devils traveled to Charles City. It was evident from the start of the game that the intensity from Thursday’s night contest was not there as the Lady Panthers broke out to a 16-13 halftime lead over the favored Mathews squad. After a few halftime adjustments and locker room encouragement, the visiting Blue Devils returned to the court to go on a 21-4 run in the third quarter to defeat Charles City, 47-33.

Spadaccini led the effort for Mathews with 18 points, followed by Robinson with 12. Duncan and Haydon contributed six points each and Wooten completed the scoring with five points.

The Lady Devils hosted the always-tough Northumberland Lady Indians on Monday. In a very physical game that was played tight throughout, the Blue Devils defeated the visitors, 51-46. Robinson and Spadaccini led the Mathews effort with 18 points each, followed by Wooten with 10, Haydon with four and Duncan with one point.

Completing the busy week, Mathews traveled to King William on Tuesday and easily defeated the Lady Cavaliers by a 49-28 final score. Always proud of his suffocating defense, head coach Tommy Eriksen was very pleased by his team’s effort during this contest. The Lady Blue Devils only gave up one two-point basket during the entire contest and did not commit any fouls in the second half.

Eriksen was able to get rest for a lot of his players as others received valuable court time. Haydon and Wooten led Mathews with 12 points each. Spadaccini chipped in 11, followed by Robinson with five and Keely Crittenden with four points. Duncan added two points and Micalea Sadler and Fells added one point each.

Eriksen continues to praise the team’s attitude and effort as it plays the challenging schedule, praising the defense and unselfishness on the offensive side of the ball.

Mathews hosts its final game before the Christmas break tonight in an important Conference 42 matchup with rivals from West Point. The JV contest begins at 5:30. The Devils return to action on Monday, Jan. 4 when they host Rappahannock. They travel to Middlesex on Jan. 5.
