This year’s annual Mathews Audubon Christmas Bird Count will begin just before dawn on Sunday, Dec. 30 as participants listen for owls, woodcocks and other nocturnal birdsong. The count will continue until dusk with birders spotting and listening for all the birds in the survey area.
The CBC is the longest-running citizen science survey of the changing habitats and migration of birds in this area.
Joyce McKelvey, who has coordinated the event for a number of years, is asking participants to put their teams together and let her know so that she can get sector packets out in a timely fashion, within the next week. She wishes to be notified of any participants’ contact information that may have changed.
She said she has several sector leaders that need to have backups cover their regular areas. “I have one experienced new birder to cover a sector who may need help from someone struggling to learn more birds,” McKelvey said.
