Market Days turnout a bit lower than last year

Despite hot and humid conditions on Friday and downpours Saturday afternoon, last weekend’s Mathews Market Days festival was a success.

Though she wasn’t able to provide a rough estimate of the number of people that attended the two-day event, Dee Russell, vice chairman of the festival’s committee, said the turnout was a bit lower than last year.

“The heat kept a lot of people away on Friday,” Russell said. Then, on Saturday, she said things were going well until an early afternoon rain shower popped up. It was after that shower ended and organizers saw there was a small window of time before the next rain was to arrive, that they decided to close the festival early, around 2:30 p.m.

By that time, she said the ground was saturated, and the committee wanted the vendors to be able to get their items packed up while no rain was falling.
