Man remains missing after boat capsizes in York River

Abingdon and Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue departments assisted in the search for a missing person after a boat overturned in the York River on Tuesday.

They remained on the scene until around 8 p.m. The U.S. Coast Guard suspended the search at about 8:20 a.m. Wednesday after having searched approximately 553 square miles through Tuesday night, said a press release.

Sector Hampton Roads received notification from the James City County Police Department around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday that a 14-foot jon boat had capsized with two people aboard near York River State Park in Williamsburg, said the release.

One person was wearing a life jacket and was recovered by James City County Police and transported to a hospital for treatment, but a 68-year-old man who was not wearing a life jacket was still missing.
