Local 4-H members excel at state horse show

Members of Gloucester 4-H horse clubs showed their horsemanship abilities both on and off the horse during the Virginia State 4-H Championship Horse and Pony Show held Sept. 11-14 in Lexington.

Gloucester youth dominated the Knowledge Challenge contests, led by overall high scorer Monet Wilson of the GLOCO Horse Club, and brought the District Challenge Award Perpetual Trophy home to the Southeast District again this year.

The 23 local equestrians represented Gloucester well and earned three division championships, including seniors Shelley Brown in hunter pleasure large pony, Victoria Coleman in western pleasure horse and Lacie Dunson in miniature horse. The following are the full results by club:

GLOCO Horse 4-H: Seniors—Anna Henderson-Cox, fifth in western showmanship, second in miniature pleasure driving, fourth in miniature jumping, fifth in miniature obstacle, first in miniature pleasure driving classics, and top 10 in hippology and horse bowl; Monet Wilson, overall high score knowledge challenge and eighth in horse photography; Trey Cox, fourth in miniature pleasure driving, third in miniature jumping, sixth in miniature obstacle and ninth in miniature pleasure driving classics; Lacie Dunson, second in miniature pleasure driving, second in miniature jumping, third in miniature obstacle, fifth in miniature pleasure driving and champion miniature horse. Juniors—Laney Hughes, first in stake race horse, third in barrel race horse, third in pole bending race horse, reserve champion in gymkhana horse, and top 10 in hippology and horse bowl; Ananiesa Brantley, fourth in lite shod walking horse pleasure first go, fourth in second go, fifth in walking horse equitation, seventh in waking horse equitation classic and fourth in lite shod walking horse classics; Abbi Reed, ninth in stake race horse; Bobby Cox, blue in stable management.

 

Midnight Riders: Seniors—Victoria Coleman, first in western pleasure horse first go, first in second go, champion western pleasure horse and Painter Memorial Perpetual Trophy, second in western horsemanship senior horse, fourth in western horsemanship classics, fifth in western pleasure classics, first and best in show in horse photography; Kathryn Whitcomb, first in barrel race horse; Savannah Coleman, first in miniature jumping, eighth in miniature obstacle; Brianna Mackey, fourth in western pleasure junior horse first go, fourth in second go, second in western horsemanship junior horse, and eighth in western pleasure horse classics; juniors, Madison Brown, second place, hunter pleasure small horse first go, second in second go, ninth in hunter equitation on the flat small horse, and first in hunter trail; Brittney Hardee, first in hunter pleasure small/medium pony first go, third in second go, reserve champion hunter pleasure small/medium pony, sixth in hunter equitation on the flat, fifth in hunter pleasure pony classics, and sixth in horse photography.

Saddle Smarts: Seniors—Shelley Brown, first in hunter showmanship, second in hunter pleasure large pony first go, fourth in second go, champion in hunter pleasure large pony, sixth in hunter pleasure pony classics, ninth in hunter equitation on the flat and fourth in hunter trail; Lilly Johnston, ninth in hunter showmanship and third in hunter pleasure large horse second go; Rebecca Jenkins, third in stake race horse, eighth in barrel race horse, fourth in pole bending race horse and top 10 in hippology and horse judging; Kaitlen Rainey, blue in stable management; juniors, Macy Berg, seventh in hunter pleasure small/medium pony; ninth in hunter equitation on the flat small/medium pony, 10th in horse photography and reserve champion for record book.

Obsession Farm: Juniors—Annie Jones, third on intermediate hunter over fences horse course A, first on course B and second in equitation over fences horse; Catherine Bishop, fourth in hunter showmanship, 10th on hunter over fences small/medium pony course A, second on course B, fourth in hunter under saddle small/medium pony and eight in equitation over fences small/medium pony; Kayleigh Drudge, sixth on hunter over fences small/medium pony course A, fifth on course B, first in equitation over fences small/medium pony and seventh in hunter equitation on the flat classics; Mattie Atkinson, 10th in hunter showmanship, fifth in hunter pleasure small/medium pony first go and sixth in second go.
