The Mathews High School varsity softball team is one victory away from earning a spot in the VHSL state tournament. After capturing the Conference 42 title last week and winning the Region 1A East quarterfinals on Monday against Surry, the Devils were headed to Parry McCluer yesterday with a state tournament berth on the line.
The Lady Devils won the conference title last Thursday in a 15-0 shutout victory over Middlesex. Madison South, Madison Owens and Kelly Adams combined to pitch a no-hitter for Mathews. South pitched the first three innings facing the minimum nine batters, striking out four while allowing no walks. Owens threw the fourth inning, also facing the minimum three batters. Adams faced the minimum three batters as well in the fifth and final inning, striking out one.
At the plate, Casey Dalton was 2-for-2 with two singles, an RBI, and two runs scored. Bailey Kujawski was 3-for-4 with three singles. Keely Crittenden and Taylor South were each 2-for-3 with two runs scored....
