MHS track athletes compete at KW meet

The Mathews High School track and field team travelled to King William on Thursday, March 26, to compete against King William, Carver Academy, King & Queen, Chincoteague and Northampton. It was a good day for the Blue Devil athletes, with many players placing.

For the boys, Trent Hudson placed 12th in the 200-meter dash and seventh in the long jump. Julian Wyatt (JV) placed 17th in the 200-meter dash. Justin Pressnell placed fourth in the 400-meter dash, fourth in the long jump, and second in the triple jump. Jacob Johson placed 11th in the 400-meter dash, third in the high jump, tenth in the long jump, fifth in the triple jump, and 10th in the discus.

Samuel Miranda placed second in the 1600-meter run. Jon Jenkins placed first in the 3,200-meter run. Ivar Golden placed second in the 3,200-meter run. Carter Coles placed second in the 110-meter dash, second in the 300-meter hurdles, and fourth in the high jump.

The boys’ 4×400 meter relay team placed third. For the girls, Elizabeth Moore placed first in the 400-meter dash and first in the 1600-meter run. Nora Suthard placed third in the 300-meter hurdles and first in the triple jump. Shalan Dease placed second in the high jump.

On Saturday, March 28, a couple of members of the team returned to King William to compete in the King William Track and Field Classic. It was a very windy and cold morning in King William, affecting competitors’ results, but the Devils persevered through the weather.

Justin Pressnell placed 10th in the 400-meter dash, 19th in the long jump, and 13th in the triple jump. Samuel Miranda placed 19th in the 800-meter dash and 15th in the 1,600-meter run.

The Devils worked hard these past meets and continued over the spring break to improve their skills.
