JOAN FRENCH WILLIAMS

Joan French Williams, 87, of Mathews, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, April 17, 2022, surrounded by her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lindley W. French and Shirley H. French, and beloved husband, Herbert Taylor Williams Jr. She is survived by her loving children, Lynn Williams Mueller and John Taylor Williams; son-in-law, Robert Curt Mueller, and daughter-in-law, Catherine Miller Williams; grandchildren, Robert Curt Mueller Jr., Matthew James Mueller, Taylor Lee Williams, and Brandon Brooks Williams, and great-grandchildren, Robert Curt Mueller III and Carter Rae Mueller.

Joan was completely devoted to her family, some joked that she would have chewed her children’s food for them if she could have. She was constantly picking up her grandchildren to take them to ballet or baseball, or taking them back to school because they forgot their reading book. She occupied her time with birdwatching on her patio overlooking Stutts Creek. She loved when her pet “Hermon the Heron” would come to visit her in the yard. Joan treasured her time volunteering at her church, making gallons of limeade for Market Days or painting beautiful florals to sell at the Fall Bazaar.

Joan, “Grandma” or “Mimi” as some called her, will be terribly missed. Her family will remember her kind soul and willingness to always offer a helping hand to those in need. When needing to feel close to her, her family would whip up one of her favorite recipes, whether it be her famous chicken casserole, broccoli cheddar soup or Texas sheet cake. We will always remember the delicious aromas and warmth of her home.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 21, 2022, at 11 a.m. at Bethel United Methodist Church, Mathews, with visitation from 10-11 a.m. Burial will follow at H.C. Smither Memorial Cemetery, Hudgins, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joan’s memory to the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad, 94 Cricket Hill Road, Hudgins, Va. 23076 or to Bethel United Methodist Church, c/o Nancy Rowe, P.O Box 1104, Mathews, Va. 23109.
