JANE ALLEN MONROE HEDGECOCK

Jane Allen Monroe Hedgecock, age 78, passed away peacefully at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital in Gloucester, Va., on Tuesday, May 17, 2022.

Born Aug. 7, 1944, in Alexandria, Va., Jane was the youngest daughter of the late John Wallace Monroe Jr. of Alexandria, and Evelyn Anna· Jones Monroe of Irvington, Va. Siblings included Sarah M. Smith of Williamsburg, Va. (nieces, Kathy Hammack and Kelly Micklem), and John W. Monroe III of Winchester, Va. (nieces, Kim Schwechel and Kara Monroe).
Jane was raised in Alexandria, and attended George Washington High School, followed by Radford and RPI Universities to earn her teaching credentials.

She was married to Maynard Hedgecock until his passing and later became a lifelong partner to recently-deceased, Charlie Johnson.

Jane was a teacher who thrived in helping children adjust to the stresses of growing up and taught them how to think critically. Not always in sync with the school administration she, reportedly, allowed her students to participate in jumping jacks or quietly move their desks if it meant the kids could concentrate on learning more effectively.
Ahead of her time, Jane taught her students lifelong skills of learning how to find answers over memorizing facts. She would have been a great mom if she had children of her own.

She will be greatly missed by those fortunate enough to call her friend or sister.

A service to celebrate her life will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 5, at Andrews Funeral Home & Crematory, 7192 Main Street, Gloucester, Va.

Arrangements are being handled by Andrews Funeral Home & Crematory.
