Household hazardous waste collection to be held at Hayes

Gloucester residents will have an opportunity to safely dispose of hazardous chemicals used for pools, lawn maintenance, and household cleaning during the fall collection of hazardous household waste. The collection will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Guinea Road Convenience Center, Hayes.

According to Leslie Bowie, the county’s clean community coordinator, the event also provides an opportunity for Gloucester residents to dispose of hazardous automobile waste such as antifreeze, brake and transmission fluids, gasoline (including gasoline/oil mix), as well as automotive and other lead-acid storage batteries. Used motor oil, she said, can be routinely recycled at any of the county’s convenience centers.

During the October event, Gloucester residents can also get rid of painting supplies, including paints, solvents, thinners, epoxies and wood preservative. Also accepted are yard, gardening and household chemicals such as pesticides and herbicides...
