Historical plaques available for downtown buildings

Preservation Mathews, an organization dedicated to preserving historic structures in Mathews County, is currently creating historical plaques for buildings in the Mathews Downtown Historic District.

All buildings in the district are eligible for the plaque, said Michael Swiderski of Preservation Mathews. The plaques are available in different sizes and prices. They will be numbered, with plaque number one reserved for Callis House, which was preserved largely because of the organization’s intervention and efforts.

Other historic properties in the county are eligible for the plaques, as well, he said. Property owners just need to provide information about their home, which will be fact-checked for accuracy.

Swiderski said another project the organization has been working on is having the county become a Certified Local Government. This is a program of the National Park Service that recognizes a locality’s commitment to historic preservation. The county would have to work ...
