Hearing Tuesday on museum request

The Mathews County Board of Supervisors and Planning Commission will hold a joint public hearing on a proposed amendment to the zoning ordinance at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the historic courthouse on Court Street.

The amendment would make a museum a by-right use in the Village Mixed Use Zoning District.

According to the planning commission packet, an applicant is interested in operating a museum in the VMU District, which is in downtown Mathews.

The ordinance defines a museum as “a facility intended primarily for the exhibit and/or repository and/or research of books, artworks, artifacts, archives, and other similar items for public appreciation and information. Accessory sales and services may be permitted.”
