Hearing Tuesday on land acquired under FEMA program

A public information meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Achilles Elementary School about property Gloucester County has acquired, or will soon acquire, under the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.

Under the terms of the federal program, often called HMGP, the county must have a plan for each parcel it acquires with grant funding, according to county spokesperson Christi Lewis, The purpose of the meeting is to gather public input on potential uses of 14 parcels that the county has acquired since the 2009 plan was adopted.

The parcels are located in the lower end of the county, mostly at Maryus, Maundys Creek, Horse Point Road and Big Island, said Anne Ducey-Ortiz, director of planning and zoning.

Michael Dodson, Gloucester’s FEMA hazard mitigation coordinator, said that entry to some of the sites is very limited and that private cemeteries are located on a few of the parcels.
