Mathews Elementary School second and fourth graders visited Tompkins Cottage the last full week of school. The ca. 1820 building stands across from the Historic Court Green and is one of the oldest structures in the Mathews Court House area. At top, Mathews County Historical Society docent Valerie Lewis explains unique features of the building to the visiting second graders. Docent Reggie Thomas, photo below, points out to fourth graders the humanitarian characteristics of Sally Tompkins, to whom the room is dedicated.
