Hearing held on Mathews recount

Three judges met last Wednesday to hear motions on a recount of the votes cast in the Nov. 5 general election between supervisor candidates G.C. Morrow and Jackie Ingram.

The hearing was held in Mathews County Circuit Court. Sitting on the panel were Judge Benjamin Elliott Bondurant, Judge Steven C. McCallum, and Judge Richard S. Wallerstein Jr.

Morrow, who requested the recount, appeared without representation but was accompanied by George Jones of Mathews. The Mathews County Electoral Board was represented by County Attorney Andrea Erard.

In the election, with three four-year seats on the ballot, Paul Hudgins, Melissa Mason and Jackie Ingram were the top vote-getters, with Morrow trailing Ingram by six votes.

Morrow told the court that during the upcoming recount he would like to be able to look at as many ballots from the Nov. 5 election as possible because he questions the optical ability of the machines to read the ballots. His motion states that he wants to determine if &ldqu...
