Hayes motorcyclist dies following Route 17 collision

An accident involving a vehicle and a motorcycle on Route 17 took the life of a Hayes man on Saturday.

The Virginia State Police said the driver of a 2019 Toyota Corolla was travelling northbound on Route 17 and attempted to make a left turn into the former Page Middle School parking lot.

When the driver made the left turn, she turned into the path of a 2008 Suzuki motorcycle driven by Dwayne Anthony Grigoleit, who was travelling southbound on Route 17, the VSP said.

State police said Grigoleit attempted to avoid the Toyota, laid down the motorcycle and was thrown, striking the Toyota. Grigoleit died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash, state police said, while the driver of the Corolla suffered minor, non-life threatening injuries.

The state police said neither alcohol nor speed were contributing factors in the crash. The accident is still under investigation, the VSP said, and charges are pending a review of the incident by the Gloucester Commonwealth Attorney’s Office.

Grigoleit, 47, was of the 6300 block of New Pine Drive in Hayes.

This was the first fatal accident on Gloucester County roads in 2021.
