On August 29, 2026, the Lord called home Herbert Alfred Bolden of Bend, Oregon, our beloved father, brother, uncle, and friend. Born on November 18, 1943, in Gloucester, Virginia, Herbert was the beloved son of the late Howard and Alice Bolden. At an early age, Herbert was baptized and began his lifelong service to the Lord at the First Morning Star Baptist Church, Bena, Virginia. He served as a faithful member and a Trustee. After graduating from Thomas C. Walker High School, he began working at Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock in Newport News, and later at the Naval Weapons Station in Yorktown, Va. He retired from the Naval Weapons Station and later worked at Advance Auto in Gloucester. In 1965, Herbert married Linda Johnson Bolden, and their daughter, Toni, was born. His cousins loved having him around and would say, “Nobody messes with Bubba and Bubba doesn’t mess with anyone,” because of his stature. Herbert was an excellent bowler and loved playing tennis. The neighbors and friends will forever remember the “Labor Day Picnics” at their home on “The Hill.” Herbert was predeceased by his parents; his wife on September 14; his sister, Brenda Joyce Bolden; brother-in-law, Larry Smith, and very close niece, Nicole Sobers. He leaves to cherish his memories, his daughter, Toni Yevette Bolden-Ealey of Chester, Va.; sister, Earlene Smith of Lanham, Md.; brother, Derek Bolden (Carol) of Flagstaff, Ariz.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Wilbur and Marion Payne of Hilton Head, S.C., and Robert and Gwynette Foster of Hayes, Va.; two nieces, Penny Martin (Aaron) of Waldorf, Md., Rachael Bolden of Flagstaff, Ariz.; seven nephews, Brian Payne (Noelle) of Los Angeles, Calif., Tommy Smith of Lanham, Md., Russell Payne (Vanessa) of Wilmette, Ill., Robert Foster (Ashley) of Ft. Mill, S.C., Matthew, Josh, and Greg Bolden of Flagstaff, Ariz.; great-nieces, Allysa Sobers and Kayla Smith of Lanham, Md.; lifelong friend, Jimmy Stokes, and a host of great-nieces and -nephews, close relatives, and dear friends. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, October 2, 2026, at First Morning Star Baptist Church, 8906 Guinea Road, Hayes, Va. 23072. Inurnment will be private. His legacy of kindness, compassion, and strength will continue to inspire others who have had the privilege of knowing him.
