With profound sadness, we announce that our beloved parents, James Wells Whitehead Jr., age 89, and Mary Davidson Whitehead, age 82, of Hayes, went home to be with their Lord and Savior within a few short months of each other.

James passed away on Saturday, May 9, 2026, with Mary following him on Thursday, September 24, 2026. After 63 years of marriage, they leave behind a legacy of love, devotion, and cherished memories.

Born in Halifax County, N.C., on January 24, 1937, James was the son of the late James Wells Whitehead and Velma Phillips Whitehead. He proudly served in the United States Air Force before working as a pipefitter in Newport News Shipbuilding’s X42 department, where he retired. Mary was born in Halifax County, N.C., on April 12, 1944 to the late John Madison Davidson and Lena Davidson Meeks. After being a homemaker, she worked as an office manager at Colonial Foot Care until her retirement.

James and Mary are survived by their children, Nancy Shipman (Robert), Wendy Fisher (Bruce), and James Whitehead III (Melanie); grandchildren, Scott Basta (Railey), Brett Fisher, Nicholas Morris (Christen), Madeline Fisher, Barbara Morris, and James Whitehead IV, and great-grandchildren, Logan, Noelle, Poppy, and Magnolia. James is also survived by his siblings, Janice Haynes Kelley, Troy Whitehead (Barbara), and Cathy Braddy. Mary is also survived by her brother-in-law, Carl Wayne Manning, and sister-in-law, Evelyn Davidson.

Please join us in celebrating a lifetime of love and partnership for James and Mary at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 23, 2026, at Providence Baptist Church, 3501 Providence Road, Hayes, Va. 23072, conducted by Pastor Nathan Varnadore. Inurnment will follow in the church cemetery. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Hospitality Committee of Providence Baptist Church, 3501 Providence Road, Hayes, Va. 23072 to continue their legacy of family, fellowship, and love.
