Ken Hardcastle was appointed head coach of the Mathews High School varsity football team during personnel actions taken at the Mathews County School Board’s May 17 meeting.
Hardcastle, who served as interim head coach at Gloucester High School for the second half of the 2012 season, takes over from Ryan Wenner, who stepped down after three seasons at MHS. Randy Applegate was appointed Hardcastle’s assistant.
Derek Kibler was reappointed MHS athletic director at the May 17 meeting, and Al Thomas and Lindsay Newell were reappointed his assistant ADs. Other coaching appointments were made for varsity football cheerleading (Deona Pavik), junior varsity cheerleading (Jennifer Hughes), cross country (Drew Greve), varsity volleyball (Pat Moughon), JV volleyball (Beth Soles), golf (Pal Jackson), MHS band/chorus (Kristina Watkins) and Thomas Hunter Middle School band/chorus (Michael Loveless).
