Guinea Heritage Day moves to Achilles Elementary

Preparations are in full swing for next month’s 40th annual Guinea Jubilee. A major part of that is Guinea Heritage Day, which is scheduled for next Sunday, Sept. 8, beginning at 2 p.m. at Achilles Elementary School.

Guinea Heritage Day, which had been held in past years at the Abingdon Ruritan Club building, is moving this year to the school to accommodate the growing crowds, an event spokesperson said.

The event will include the announcement of this year’s grand marshal. It will also reveal winners of the 2019 print and photography contest and the Achilles Student Art contest. The 2019 Miss Guinea Jubilee will also be crowned and there will be a silent auction of homemade Guinea cakes.

Those who attend will also have the first chance to preview the signed print hallmarking this year’s festival, as well as Guinea Jubilee T-shirts, cookbooks and other 40th year-celebration merchandise.
