Gloucester woman wins top prize in Va. Lottery scratcher

You could say that Oletha Etheridge is a lucky woman. In her 20s, she won $25,000 from the Virginia Lottery. Now in her 60s, she’s won again—this time it was $100,000 a year for 10 years.

The Gloucester woman purchased a $100,000 a Year ticket from Food Lion in Gloucester. After scratching the ticket, she asked her daughter, “Are you sitting down? ’Cause I have something to tell you.”

Etheridge had won the game’s top prize. She had a choice of taking the full prize in annual payments over 10 years or a one-time cash option of $816,000 before taxes. She chose the cash option and is splitting the prize with her two daughters, Taletha and Takema.

The $100,000 a Year scratcher (game #2343) is one of dozens of scratcher games offered by the Virginia Lottery. It features prizes ranging from $20 up to that $1,000,000 top prize. This is the second top prize claimed in the game, which means one more top prize remains unclaimed. The chances of winning the top prize are 1 in 612,000. The chances of winning any prize in this game are 1 in 2.91 million.

According to a release from the Virginia Lottery, Etheridge plans to use her winnings to buy “an affordable Corvette” and to add some rooms on to her house that she originally purchased with her $25,000 win. Her daughters will use their portion of the winnings to buy houses for themselves.

All Virginia Lottery profits go to K-12 education in Virginia. In Fiscal Year 2025, the Virginia Lottery raised more than $901 million for K-12 education, making up approximately 10 percent of Virginia’s total K-12 school budget.
