Gloucester supervisors approve utilities rate increase

The Gloucester County Board of Supervisors voted to increase the monthly sewer and water charges by 13 percent for all customers by a vote of 5-2, effective July 1, following a public hearing on the topic during Tuesday night’s meeting held in the colonial courthouse. Ashley Chriscoe and Chris Hutson voted against the increase. According to Director of Public Utilities Katey Legg, raising the rates by 13 percent for fiscal year 2027 is projected to generate $710,000 in revenue. “We can’t keep going up at this rate,” said Nathan Brown of the Ware District during public comment, “because people don’t make enough money to pay it.” “These are huge increases over the next four years,” said Hutson during board discussion, citing the county’s plan to continue to raise utilities rates over the next several years. “For 10 years, we didn’t raise the rates at all,” said interim County Administrator George Bains, “but everything else kept going up.” The rates were increased for the first time in a...
