A two-vehicle accident Monday morning near the intersection of Route 17 and Fiddlers Green Road near Gloucester Court House resulted in the death of 81-year-old Robert William Plummer of the 8200 block of Sheffield Drive, Gloucester.
State Police were called to the scene shortly after 10 a.m. Preliminary investigations reveal that a 2015 Mercedes-Benz was traveling northbound on Route 17. Plummer was driving southbound on Route 17 in a 2012 Toyota.
As the Mercedes-Benz entered the intersection of Route 17 and Fiddlers Green Road, Plummer attempted to make a left turn onto Main Street and turned into the path of the Mercedes-Benz, pushing his Toyota off the roadway and into a ditch, State Police said. Plummer suffered major life-threatening injuries and was airlifted from the scene to Norfolk Sentara Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries shortly afterward.
The driver of the Mercedes-Benz suffered non-life threatening injuries. Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the incident. Notification has been made to Plummer’s next of kin. The crash remains actively under investigation at this time.
Plummer is the third traffic fatality in Gloucester in 2022.
