A 52-year-old Gloucester man died as a result of his injuries following an armed confrontation with deputies early Saturday evening in the Ark area of the county, according to reports from the Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office and the Virginia State Police.
Willie Dion Giles of the 6300 block of Old Swimmin Hole Road in Gloucester was flown to Norfolk Sentara Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries, according to Sgt. Michelle Anaya of the VSP.
According to a report from the sheriff’s office, deputies were called to the 7000 block of Ark Road Saturday evening in reference to a call for help involving an armed subject after information had been received that the suspect was attempting to break into a residence.
Deputies arrived on scene and encountered a male walking down the back steps of a residence. Deputies gave verbal commands to the suspect who then produced a handgun, pointed it at officers, and fired, the GCSO report stated. At that time, deputies returned fire and the suspect sustained life-threatening injuries. No deputies were injured during the incident.
Virginia State Police is investigating this case, as is protocol with all officer-involved shootings with the agency. The deputies involved in the incident have been placed on leave pending the conclusion of the criminal and administrative investigation.
Once the VSP concludes its investigation, the investigative findings will be turned over to the Commonwealth’s Attorney office for final review and adjudication.
