GHS baseball falls short in state quarterfinals

The Gloucester High School varsity baseball team’s stellar season came to an end Tuesday afternoon. The Dukes made it all the way to the VHSL Class 5 tournament, suffering a heartbreaking loss in the bottom of the seventh inning to Cox, 4-3, in the quarterfinals.

Gloucester earned a spot in the state tournament after defeating Menchville, 4-3, last Wednesday, May 31, in the Region B semifinals. The Dukes fell to Nansemond River by a 4-2 margin Friday, becoming the regional runners-up.

That game was scoreless until the top of the seventh inning when Nansemond River made it a 2-0 ballgame. At the bottom of the seventh, Gloucester tied the game by scoring two. The eighth inning remained scoreless by both teams. The Warriors scored two runs at the top of the ninth inning, but Gloucester did not score again. Grayson Shield led the Dukes in RBIs, bringing in two runs in four at-bats.
