G.I. Festival a success, despite heat

“Thank you does not say enough,” Jan Bassett, chairman of this past weekend’s Gwynn’s Island Festival, said of the hard work of Gwynn’s Island Civic League members and others who helped to make the 71st annual festival a huge success.

Though she said she thought the crowds weren’t quite as large as last year, vendors reported better sales this past weekend.

Bassett said the only minor hiccup this year came during the annual Chicken Dinner Friday night when there was a chicken mix-up. “But instead of being an issue, the community turned it into fellowship time until the chicken arrived,” Basset said. “Many thanks to the people for taking time to slow down and enjoy one another.”

Bassett said the festival day Saturday was a hot one, but not as hot as last year. She said most of the crowds came early in the day. Despite the heat, she said the Kid’s Zone was full of children and vendors reported a successful and profitabl...
