G.I. bridge closed to daytime boat traffic during inspections

The Gwynn’s Island bridge in Mathews is undergoing inspections for the next three weeks and will be closed to boat traffic from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

VDOT spokesperson Kelly Hannon said that the inspections are of the bridge’s movable mechanical elements and that they are expected to be completed by Aug. 3. Vehicle traffic will be able to travel over the bridge, she said.

Petty Officer Evan Beavers of U.S. Coast Guard Station Milford Haven said the station is keeping its large boat at Narrows Marina during the closure. The boat is being started every four hours because it’s not hooked up to shore power, he said, and security rounds are being conducted 24 hours a day. ...
