Flooding at Beaverlett

Although the sun was out and there was no rain on Monday, recent drenching rains left Callis Field Lane at Beaverlett still flooded near its intersection with Ridgefield Road. Water also stood across a large field adjacent to the road. Saluda Residency Administrator Joyce McGowan said that a Virginia Department of Transportation crew had placed high water signs over the weekend and had checked the roadside ditches, but had found no obstructions to cause the standing water. Mathews County Planning and Zoning Director Thomas Jenkins said the county had a ditch crew from Ditch Maintenance of Suffolk there in January to clean debris from an outfall ditch under the county’s ditch maintenance program, but the crew’s machine broke and hasn’t been repaired yet. He said he hopes to get it back shortly. Photo by Sherry Hamilton ...
