Flags from the Heart to decorate veterans’ graves Saturday

 

Flags from the Heart, an initiative of Flowers from the Heart in Mathews, returns again this year, with 2,000 American flags available to be placed on veterans’ graves in observance of Memorial Day.

People interested in volunteering to place flags on the graves of their loved ones or others are asked to meet at 8 a.m. Saturday at the American Legion building on Hookemfair Road at Hudgins to pick up flags, a list of names, and maps.

Michael Schramm, who co-owns the flower shop along with his wife, Jo, is in charge of this year’s effort. He said when he visited the H.C. Smither Memorial Cemetery a couple of years ago to place a flag on the grave of his late father-in-law, he was struck by how many veterans’ graves didn’t have flags at all.

Last year, when Theresa Edwards Morgan, former owner of the flower shop, launched the Flags from the Heart project along with her husband, Rusty, Schramm was right there with them, helping out.
